Scudéry's map also shows where not to go. Off the main road lie the Lake of Indifference and the Sea of Enmity.
The Lake of Indifference
The opposite of love is rarely a fight. More often it is quiet: you stop asking questions, stop noticing each other, and settle into numbness. Without attention, even good relationships can drift there.
Pride, Gossip and Neglect
Along the road sit Orgueil (Pride), Médisance (Gossip) and Négligence (Neglect). A complaint shared with friends instead of your partner tends to harden into contempt, and a small slight left alone can steer you toward the Sea of Enmity.
Turning back
Noticing that you've drifted toward the lake isn't failure; it's what a map is for. An honest alignment helps you spot the drift early, before silence turns into distance, and head back.
